The American Dream

Shane and Crysta;

For Shane and Crystal, their American dream always included a home of their own, a place where their children could run and play. Their previous place, a tiny 650 square foot apartment with one bathroom, was quickly becoming too small for their family of five. Unable to get a traditional mortgage and with rent payments growing, Shane and Crystal felt stuck.

That's when they learned about Habitat for Humanity from a friend's husband. Their friend had volunteered with Habitat through his company learned about the opportunity Habitat Waukesha can provide to the community and suggested that they apply.

"With the words of encouragement from our friends, hope in our hearts, and trust in the Lord, we went to a meeting and continued to pray about his opportunity." When they learned that they were approved, they were so overjoyed by the opportunity provided to them.

Shane works as a machinist at Becker Machine and is currently working towards his Masters of Divinity and training for the Gospel Ministry. Crystal is a stay at home mother with their three young children and is involved with the Waukesha Citizens Police Academy Alumni organization.

Their children are excited about their new home, with its own backyard and nearby parks. Their oldest daughter is most excited about sharing a room with her little sister and has been drawing plans on how to decorate the room.

"We are excited to open our home to others," Crystal wrote, "We did not have the space to entertain our family or friends for holidays or even birthday parties, but now we will be able to properly have people over for those celebrations."

Every future homeowner has to complete 'sweat equity' hours either on the build site or at the Habitat ReStore. Shane and Crystal have been putting hours in working alongside volunteers on their own home. "It really was a unique way to delve into home ownership. Most people do not get to be a part of that process."

Shane and Crystal are joyously overwhelmed by those who volunteered on their home and are humbled with the kindness of those who reached out to help.

"Those people who have donated their time, skills, home furnishing, and money to make our dream come true inspires us to pass on that kindness. We will not disappoint you- we will be incredible assets to the community. From the bottom of our hearts, Thank you."
